Garage door panel replacement means taking out one damaged section of a sectional door and fitting a matching section from the same maker, size and style. You need it when a car, a mower or a storm has dented, cracked or bent one section, while the springs, cables and the other sections are still sound.

Signs a Section Needs Replacing

  • A dent deep enough that the section bows in or out when the door moves.
  • A crack along a seam, or a split where the hinges bolt on.
  • Rust that has eaten through the steel skin near the floor.
  • A wood section that is soft, rotted or splitting at the ends.
  • Daylight or water coming in because the damaged section no longer lines up.
  • A section that catches on the track or makes the door jerk at the same point every time.

How We Replace a Garage Door Panel

  1. Identify the door. The technician reads the maker's label or measures the sections, notes the style, color and insulation, and checks whether that section is still made.
  2. Price it. Once the match is confirmed, you hear one exact price for the section and labor. You decide before anything is ordered.
  3. Make the door safe. On install day the opener is disconnected, the door is clamped, and spring tension is released if the bottom section is involved.
  4. Swap the section. Hinges and rollers come off the damaged section, the new one goes in, and the hardware is refitted or renewed where it is worn.
  5. Balance and test. Spring tension is reset, the door is checked for balance by hand, and the opener's auto-reverse is tested before the visit ends.

Parts and Options

Steel, wood or composite. Steel sections are the most common and are made in many embossed patterns. Wood sections can be matched only when the maker still builds that design, and they need paint or stain on site. Composite sections resist dents and rot and come in wood-look finishes.

Insulated or single-layer. An insulated door has foam between two steel skins; the new section must have the same thickness, or the hinges and seals will not line up. A single-layer section is lighter and simpler to match.

Windows and struts. If the damaged section had window inserts or a reinforcing strut across the back, the new one gets the same, so the door looks right and keeps its strength where the opener pulls.

Safety

A garage door section looks like a simple panel, but the door is held up by springs under heavy tension. The bottom section anchors the lift cables, and removing its brackets with the springs wound can send a cable or bracket flying. Do not unbolt sections yourself, do not run the opener on a bent door, and keep children and pets away from a door that sits crooked.

Repair or Replace?

One damaged section on a door that is otherwise balanced and solid is a good candidate for panel replacement. When two or more sections are damaged, when the model is out of production, or when the whole door is rusting, a new door usually costs less over time than repeated section swaps. The technician gives you both options in plain words.

What moves the final price: the door's width and the section's position, steel versus wood or composite, insulation, window inserts, whether a strut is needed, and whether worn hinges, rollers or a frayed cable are found during the swap. Those extra parts are named and priced before they are replaced. Have a question first? Reach us through the contact page.

Panel Replacement Questions

Can you replace just one dented section of my garage door?

Often, yes. Sectional doors are built from separate horizontal sections, so one damaged section can be swapped if the maker still sells it in your size, style and color. If it is no longer made, the technician tells you so on the visit and explains the other choices, including new garage door installation.

Why does the bottom section need extra care?

The bottom section carries the brackets where the lift cables attach, and those cables hold the spring tension. Loosening them without first taking the tension off can injure someone badly. The technician unloads the springs before the bracket comes off, which is also when worn cables are found. Cable repair starts at $150 per cable.

Will a new section match the color of my old door?

It will match the factory color of that model, but an older door may have faded in the sun, so a slight difference can show. Some owners paint the whole door afterward to even it out. The technician points this out before you approve the price. Rollers and hinges can be checked during the same garage door repair visit.

My door was hit by a car and will not close. What should I do?

Stop using the opener, keep everyone clear of the door and call. A hit often bends the track and loosens rollers as well as denting a section, and a bent door can fall. If the opening must be secured tonight, the 24/7 line arranges emergency garage door repair first and the section swap later.

Is it worth replacing a section on an old door?

It depends on the rest of the door. If the springs, cables and other sections are in good shape, one new section restores it at a fraction of a full door. If several sections are cracked or rusted, the money is better spent on a new door. Compare both on our pricing page.
