Garage door track repair is the work of straightening, refastening or replacing the steel rails that guide the rollers, and putting a door that has jumped those rails back where it belongs. You need it when the door shakes, binds or rubs, leaves a gap along one side, or hangs crooked in the opening.
Signs You Need Garage Door Track Repair
- A gap opens between the edge of the door and the rail on one side.
- Rollers have popped out of the track, or the door hangs at an angle.
- The door shudders, scrapes or stalls at the same spot every time.
- A rail has a visible dent or kink, often low down where a bumper or a bin struck it.
- Brackets holding the rail to the wall are loose, bent or missing a bolt.
- Rollers wobble on their stems, show cracks or are worn flat on one side.
Spot one of these? Stop running the opener until the rail has been looked at, because every cycle over a bad spot makes it worse.
How We Repair Garage Door Tracks
- Secure the door. If the door is off its rails, we clamp it and take the weight off before anything is loosened, so it cannot drop.
- Find out why it left the track. A bent rail, a broken roller, a snapped cable or a car bump each need a different fix, and we look for all of them.
- Price it first. Track work starts from $150 per door, and you hear the exact figure for your door before we begin.
- Straighten or replace, then align. Dents are worked out or the rail section is replaced, the brackets are tightened, and both vertical rails are set plumb with an even gap to the door.
- Balance and test with you. We check the springs and cables, adjust the opener if there is one, and run the door with you until it travels quietly from the floor to the top.

Track Types and Parts
- Standard-lift track. The most common setup: the rail rises a short way above the opening, then curves back under the ceiling.
- High-lift track. The vertical rail runs well above the opening before it turns, so the open door sits higher and leaves more room below it.
- Low-headroom track. A second rail at the top lets a door fit under a ceiling with very little space above the opening.
- Nylon or steel rollers. Nylon rollers with sealed bearings run quieter; plain steel rollers cost less and make more noise. Either type is replaced as a set when worn.
- Brackets and hangers. Jamb brackets hold the vertical rails to the wall and rear hangers carry the horizontal rails. One loose lag screw is enough to let a rail drift out of line.
- Torsion or extension springs. On doors with extension springs, the springs run beside the horizontal rails, so a bent rail there often means checking the springs and their safety cables too. See garage door spring repair.
Safety With an Off-Track Door
A door that has left its rails is no longer guided, so it can twist, jam or fall. Do not run the opener, do not try to force the rollers back in while the door is raised, and keep everyone out from under it. If the door is down, leave it down. If it is stuck open, clear the area and call (571) 410-8727; the line is answered 24/7, and a door in that state is handled as emergency garage door repair.
Repair or Replace the Track?
A rail with one dent is usually straightened. A rail that is creased, torn at a bolt hole or rusted through is replaced in sections, and the rest stays. The door itself rarely has to go, unless its sections bent when it came off the track. In that case we price panel replacement or a new garage door at the same visit and explain the difference in plain words.
Starting Prices — Garage Door Track Repair
- Track Repair & Off-Track Door per door
- From $150
- Diagnostic Service Call $0 with a completed repair
- $0
Track work and off-track doors start from $150 per door. You get the exact figure for your door before any bolt is turned.
What moves the final price is the extent of the damage. Straightening one dented rail costs less than replacing a section, and a door that came fully off its track takes more time to secure and rehang than one that only rubs. Worn rollers add from $120 per set, and a broken cable found on the same door is priced separately, from $150 per cable. We list each part before the work starts.
Garage Door Track Questions
Can I push the rollers back into the track myself?
It is not a good idea. The springs keep tension on the door even when it is off its rails, and a door that slips while you work on it can fall or pinch hands. Leave it closed if it is closed, unplug the opener and call us. If a cable also came loose, see garage door cable repair.
Why did my door come off its track?
The usual causes are a car or bin hitting the bottom of the rail, a roller that cracked or seized, a broken lift cable, or brackets that worked loose over time. An opener that keeps pushing a binding door can finish the job. We look for every cause, because fixing only the rail lets the door jump again. Garage door repair covers the full check.
Should rollers be replaced along with the track?
Only when they are worn. Cracked, wobbling or flat-sided rollers drag in the rail and can pop out again, so we change them as a set once they are past it. Roller replacement starts from $120 per set, and good rollers stay in. If the noise comes from the motor rather than the rail, look at garage door opener repair.
Is high-lift track worth it in a tall garage?
It can be. High-lift track runs the door higher up the wall before it turns, which frees ceiling space for storage or a car lift. It needs different springs and drums, so a conversion is planned and priced on site rather than done as a quick fix. Ask about it when you book, or when you price a new garage door installation.
Will the door keep working with one bent rail?
Sometimes, for a while, but each trip over the dent wears the rollers and strains the opener, and a deep kink can throw the door out of the rail. Stop using the opener once you see a gap or hear scraping. If the door ends up stuck open, call our emergency garage door repair line, which is answered 24/7.
